At noon Sunday, we boarded the transfer bus to take us the
120 miles South from Anchorage to Seward, Alaska. This was no regular bus ride, however. This Alaskan byway is ranked one of the
top 5 most scenic routes in the world – and it was easy to see why. The drive included walls of 4500
ft mountains on either side; glacier-carved valleys; natives combat fishing for
spawning silver salmon; and a variety of small Alaskan towns, including Hope,
the pioneer of the Alaskan Gold Rush.
After arriving at port, we dropped our belongings off in our
cute little stateroom and headed for “downtown” Seward, which was about a mile
away (only because we can’t walk on water) and consisted of approximately 10
small buildings. It was exactly
what you would imagine a quintessential Alaskan fishing town to look like –
except about 50 times more beautiful! It’s surrounded by ice-capped mountains and turquoise seas,
so clear you can almost see the bottom. We stopped at Ray’s and had our first
taste of local Alaskan beer – Kenai River Nut Brown Ale, yum – then headed back
to the ship to settle in.
Ryan and I can’t stop staring at the glacier mountain
landscape. It’s so awe inspiring
that it doesn’t seem real, almost like we’ve been transported to some alternate
utopian universe where everything is so pristine, you’re afraid to touch it
lest it disappear. Our first night
at sea, and we saw two bald eagles, thousands of schooling jellyfish, and an
amazing Alaskan sunset (at 10:30pm)!
Finally, exhaustion got the best of us and we called it a night.
Seward was just the beginning, and we’re already blown
away. We can’t wait to see Glacier
Bay tomorrow!
P.S. Turns out we have to pay for wifi, so don't be alarmed if we're not in touch! xoxo
